Hi, I am Melanie!  I am a public speaker, author, and Chief Operating Officer of Aimee Copeland Foundation in Atlanta GA!  I am a double amputee and before my work with ACF believed the only time I enjoyed being outside was being at the beach or the pool.  Boy was I wrong.  All Terrain Georgia is the flag ship project for ACF, and we provide All Terrain Wheelchairs for individuals with mobility impairments to get out into nature free of charge at Georgia state and national parks. I learned that being in nature is a wonderful healing tool and can be a fantastic outlet for grief and sorrow as well as happiness and joy!  I am so fortunate to be part of such an amazing organization!

I have faced and overcome many challenges in my life, always relying on faith and family to guide me through. I contracted water born staph in 2012 and to date have had 70 surgeries.  Including the amputation of my right foot and left leg as well as 2 major spinal surgeries.  With each medical challenge comes healing not only physical but also emotional.  I have learned over the years how to deal with both aspects of healing and now they are not as unbearable as they once were.  I turn my focus on others and not myself.  I know that it might sound simple, but it has taken years of practice.

My faith and my family are the key to my success.  I am fortunate to have such an amazing support system.  I speak about the importance of finding your support even if it is within your own self.  Everyone has the ability to find a way to deal with their difficulties and they have to do it in their own time and in their own way and rely on their higher power, whether it be God or whatever power they ascribe to, mine happens to be God.  It is necessary to go through the grieving process.  I certainly did.  I have grieved so much loss in my life and when it was time, I began to make positive steps forward.  

I thank my family, friends, doctors, nurses, all of my therapists and any medical professional that has helped me in the last 12 years.  It has been a journey.  But whether or not you are suffering from the loss of a loved one, a medical situation. a job, or anything important in your life, there is a way forward.  I would love to have the opportunity to speak with your group to tell my story and offer my insights.
